Some Haunted locations and buildings in South Wales.
Wales is not only known for its stunning landscapes but also for its rich history and numerous haunted locations. Why not visit some of these locations this half term.
Sker House, Porthcawl LD8 2RE.
An 800-year-old mansion has long captured the imagination of storytellers. There is the tragic story of Elizabeth Williams, a young woman said to have died of a broken heart after her father locked her away to stop her marrying the man she loved.
It was immortalised in the Victorian novel “The Maid of Sker”, inspired by the story.
The house itself has a dark and violent past. In the 16th century, it was the site of brutal attacks against Catholics, the very faith on which the house was founded.
Today, some believe that history still lingers within its walls. Witnesses have reported hearing high-pitched screeches, screams, and haunting cries. Others claim to have seen shadowy figures, particularly in the room where Elizabeth is said to have been confined.
Many who enter the house describe an overwhelming sense of unease… with some even saying they felt physically sick.
Llandaff Ghosts of Taff Trail
Llandaff is home to a cluster of ghost stories, five in total, many of them dating back to around the same period.
One of the most well-known, is the tale of a young boy, often seen dressed in blue, who is said to have drowned while playing along the banks of the River Taff. His mother, too, is believed to haunt the area. Late at night, some witnesses claim to have seen the figure of a woman wading through the water, as if still searching for her son.
Paranormal investigators in Wales suggest that her spirit continues that search to this day.
Another story tells of a woman named Bella, who took her own life in the area more than a century ago. Some believe her presence still lingers along the Taff Trail.
And then there’s the ghost of a man said to have died by suicide in Llandaff’s graveyard. According to local accounts, he follows visitors at a distance and some on guided ghost tours even claim to have felt an unexplained touch, as though someone was trying to get their attention.
Craig Y Nos Castle SA9 1GL
Craig y Nos has a long and layered history. At the turn of the 20th century, it was the home of a world-famous opera star and later became a sanatorium for children suffering from tuberculosis.
But it’s the stories from inside the building that continue to unsettle visitors.
The television programme Most Haunted once investigated the site, and members of the crew claimed the old salt cellar is home to what they described as a particularly unpleasant presence.
Down in the cellar, there’s also the so-called slab room, the place where opera star Adelina Patti’s body was prepared after her death.
In one of the upper rooms, TV psychic Derek Acorah said he sensed something deeply disturbing, describing the feeling that a child had once been pushed from a window.
And then there’s the photograph… one image appears to show the outline of a man in formal evening dress, captured mid-step as he walks up the staircase.
Skirrid Inn, Nr Abergavenny NP7 8DH
Many ghost stories speak of spirits seen from afar… shadows in the distance, figures that vanish when you get too close. But here… things are very different.
At the Skirrid Mountain Inn, the spirits don’t just linger… they reach out.
This historic inn dates back over 800 years and once served as a courthouse. Within its walls, 182 felons were sentenced and hanged from a beam that still remains to this day.
And perhaps… they never truly left.
Visitors have reported chilling encounters… not just sightings, but physical sensations. Some say they’ve felt an unseen force tighten around their neck… as if a noose were being pulled from the shadows.
One medium spoke of a middle-aged woman… a lingering presence… later believed to be the wife of former owner Harry Price, who tragically died from consumption in the 18th century.
And I can tell you… from personal experience… this place is far from quiet.
I’ve visited the Skirrid Inn many times… even carried out a private investigation within its walls. And I wasn’t alone.
I felt the presence of a young girl… Fanny Price.
Soft… but unmistakable.
The faint rustle of her dress… trailing behind me… following me from room to room… as though she never wanted me to leave.
Margam Castle, Port Talbot SA13 2TJ
With its striking Gothic architecture… Margam Castle is truly an impressive sight but beneath its beauty lies something far more unsettling.
The most well-known spirit said to haunt the castle is Robert Scott, a former gamekeeper.
Witnesses claim he’s often seen slowly ascending the grand staircase… a shadowy figure replaying the past. But he’s not just a silent presence… those who have tried to reach out to him say he responds, sometimes by throwing stones… as if warning them to stay back.
And he may not be alone.
Visitors and staff have reported hearing the sound of children, laughter echoing through empty corridors… the patter of footsteps where no one walks.
Some even say they’ve seen Victorian children playing… their giggles filling the rooms… before suddenly falling silent.
Objects have been known to move on their own, doors shifting, items displaced… as if unseen hands are still at play within the castle walls.
At Margam Castle… the past doesn’t just linger, it plays.
Castell Coch, near Cardiff
Let me take you now to the haunting legends surrounding Castell Coch, where history and folklore blur into something far more chilling.
First… the tragic tale of Dame Griffith.
It’s said that her young son, while exploring the castle grounds… fell into a deep, dark pool… black as night… and impossibly deep. His body was never recovered.
The loss was too much for her to bear.
Heartbroken… Dame Griffith died soon after. But death, it seems… did not bring her peace.
For years… people claimed to see her spirit wandering the castle… and the surrounding forest… endlessly searching… not just for her son’s body… but for his very soul.
And then… there’s the legend of the Castle Eagles.
A story passed down through generations… speaks of a hidden underground passage… said to connect Castell Coch… to Cardiff Castle.
Long ago, the castle’s master is believed to have hidden a chest filled with money and jewels, deep within that passage.
Naturally, it wasn’t long before brave, or perhaps foolish, explorers decided to find it.
Armed with torches and tools… they ventured underground… deeper and deeper… until, in the darkness… they saw them.
Four glowing red lights.
Unmoving… watching.
As they approached… the truth became clear.
They weren’t lights at all… but eyes.
The eyes of two enormous eagles… perched silently atop an iron chest.
The men pressed forward… but in an instant… the creatures sprang to life. With beating wings, claws and beaks… they attacked… driving the intruders back in terror.
Still… they returned.
Armed with pistols… they fired.
Cosmeston Lakes Country Park CF64 5UY
Welcome to the still waters and shadowed paths of Cosmeston Lakes Country Park… where history doesn’t just linger… it watches.
Nestled on the edge of Penarth lies a place that feels frozen in time, a re-created 14th-century medieval village. By day, it’s a window into the past… but by night, some say… it becomes something else entirely.
Visitors and staff alike have reported chilling encounters within the village boundaries. Figures have been seen… approaching silently near the old manor house… only to vanish into thin air before reaching their destination. No footsteps. No sound. Just… gone.
Others speak of something far more personal. The unmistakable sensation of someone standing right beside you. Breathing. Watching. Following. Yet when you turn… there’s nothing there. Just the creak of timber and the whisper of wind through thatched roofs.
And perhaps that’s no surprise.
Because this isn’t just a reconstruction… it stands on the very ground of a real medieval village, one abandoned in the 1340s. Some believe it fell victim to the horrors of the Black Death… while others whisper of flooding… or something darker that drove its people away.
Whatever the truth… they never truly left.
Today, the site embraces its eerie reputation. During Halloween, the village comes alive with unsettling characters, the Butcher… the Baker… the Coffin Maker… each adding to the growing legend that this is no ordinary historical attraction.
Because here, in this so-called “living history” site… the past doesn’t just come to life.
…it refuses to stay buried.
I really hope you’ve enjoyed reading about these spooky locations. More coming soon!!
