He was just five years old.

On the evening of August 4th, 1900, Tommy set out on a journey with his father, a miner from the village of Maerdy. Their destination was his grandparents’ home, a remote farmhouse called Cwmllwch, lying beneath the towering slopes of Pen y Fan.

The journey began by train, but the final stretch had to be made on foot, a walk of around four miles through open valley and rising ground. As evening drew in, father and son reached a building known as the Login, used as accommodation for soldiers training further up the valley in Cwm Gwdi.

They stopped there briefly for refreshments, and by chance, they met family. Tommy’s grandfather and his thirteen-year-old cousin, William.

A simple plan was suggested. William would return ahead to the farmhouse to let Tommy’s grandmother know they were on their way.

But Tommy insisted on going with him.

The two boys set off together, heading toward the darkening slopes beneath Pen y Fan. At first, they walked side by side, but as the light began to fade, the vastness of the landscape seemed to close in around them. Before long, Tommy grew uneasy.

Partway along the route, he became upset. He told William he wanted to go back, back to his father at the Login. The growing darkness, the quiet, and the unfamiliar surroundings may have frightened him.

What happened next would seal his fate.

The boys agreed to split up.

William would continue on to the farmhouse. Tommy would turn back alone, retracing his steps to where his father waited.

William carried on and reached the farm without difficulty. Later, he returned with the adults to the Login.

But Tommy had never arrived.

Somewhere in the gathering night, the five-year-old boy had vanished into the vast mountain landscape.

The search began immediately. His father and grandfather set out along the path, calling his name into the darkness, their voices echoing across the hills. Soldiers from the nearby training camp joined them, their lanterns cutting faint paths through the night.

But the mountains were vast, and the darkness complete.

By midnight, the search had to be called off.

At first light, it began again, larger, more desperate. Police officers, soldiers, farmers, and volunteers combed the valleys and slopes around Pen y Fan. They searched hillsides, streams, and deep ravines, day after day.

But there was no trace of the little boy.

Days turned into weeks. The story spread across the region, carried by newspapers and word of mouth, the heartbreaking tale of a child lost somewhere in the mountains.

Hope began to fade.

Then, nearly a month after Tommy disappeared, something extraordinary was reported.

A woman living near Brecon had been following the case. She had no connection to the family, yet the story troubled her deeply. Soon, she began to dream, vivid, repeated dreams of a specific place high on the mountainside.

Night after night, the same vision returned.

Disturbed and unable to ignore it, she eventually persuaded her husband to go with her and search the location she had seen.

On Sunday, September 2nd, the couple borrowed a pony and cart and made their way toward the Brecon Beacons, a place they had never climbed before. Guided only by the memory of her dreams, they began to ascend the ridge beneath Pen y Fan.

High on the open mountainside, they found him.

Tommy Jones.

No one could explain how a five-year-old child had managed to climb so far. From the Login, he had ascended more than 1,300 feet over rough, rising terrain that would challenge even an adult.

An inquest later concluded that Tommy had died from exhaustion and hypothermia after losing his way on the mountain.

There were no signs of foul play. Just a tragic sequence of events, a wrong decision, a fading light, and a child alone in a vast and unforgiving landscape.

The story deeply moved the local community. At the inquest, the jurors made an extraordinary gesture, each donated their fees to fund a memorial at the place where Tommy had been found.

Today, a granite obelisk still stands on the hillside beneath Pen y Fan.

Weathered by wind and time, it remains a quiet, lonely marker in the open landscape, a lasting reminder of a small boy, a desperate search, and a story that has never been forgotten.

More than a century later, the mountains remain unchanged.

Beautiful… vast… and, at times, unforgiving.

And somewhere among them, the memory of Tommy Jones still lingers.

Good evening… Tonight we tell the tragic, true story of a small boy whose fate became one of the most enduring legends of the Brecon Beacons.
