And let me tell you—Tredegar House is absolutely packed with them.

Just on the outskirts of Newport, a stone’s throw from the busy M4, this grand estate draws in thousands of visitors every year. Families wander the tree-lined avenues, soaking up the history and scenery—completely unaware that beneath the elegance lies a seriously eerie past.

A House Steeped in Secrets

Tredegar House dates all the way back to the 1400s and was home to the powerful Morgan family for centuries. Over the years, it’s seen everything from civil war to rebellion—and, if the stories are to be believed, something far more supernatural.

One of the most intriguing chapters begins with Evan Morgan, the estate’s last resident. Known for his eccentric lifestyle, Evan wasn’t just hosting lavish parties—he was also rumoured to be dabbling in witchcraft.

Guests included high society figures and famous names like H. G. Wells, alongside aristocrats and socialites of the 1920s and ’30s. But these weren’t your average dinner parties. Think fortune-telling, bizarre costumes, and even an Arctic owl flying freely indoors.

And then there’s the darker connection—Aleister Crowley, one of the most infamous figures in occult history, is said to have visited. Coincidence? Maybe. But it certainly adds to the atmosphere.

Ghosts in the Corridors

Fast forward to more recent times, and the stories only get stranger.

Visitors and staff alike have reported:

Bells ringing with no one there

Doors locking and unlocking on their own

Footsteps echoing through empty rooms

Lights flickering without explanation

One of the most chilling sightings? A grey-clad nun seen standing at the top of the staircase—completely still, completely silent.

Others have described entire processions of spectral nuns walking through the courtyard. And in the Sunken Garden? A lone figure, calmly sitting as if time itself forgot them.

Even the old servant bell system—once used to summon staff—has been heard ringing unexpectedly, long after it fell out of use.

The Outbuildings: Where Things Get Darker

If you think the main house is unsettling, the outbuildings take things to another level.

Back in the 1970s, when parts of the estate were converted into community spaces, strange activity began almost immediately. Objects moving. Lights switching on and off. Doors locking people inside rooms.

One particularly chilling account tells of fruit being thrown around inside a closed supermarket—after hours.

Eventually, a séance was held. What came through? Two spirits—former workers named Capp and Tradrapp, said to have died in a barn fire in the 1800s.

But they weren’t alone.

They spoke of something darker. A presence known only as Montcrese—a malevolent entity allegedly tied to ongoing supernatural activity in the house. Even these spirits, it’s said, were afraid of him.

Other names followed. A young woman known as Waif. Another spirit, Jullye, dating back centuries. And even a boy named Roderick, whose presence was said to be accompanied by the sweet scent of fuchsia.

So… Haunted or History Playing Tricks?

Of course, sceptics will say it’s all down to old buildings—creaks, drafts, and overactive imaginations. And yes, historic houses are known for their quirks.

But when the stories stack up like this—from different people, across decades—it does make you wonder…

Is Tredegar House simply a beautiful piece of Welsh history?
Or could it be one of Britain’s most haunted locations—perhaps even rivaling Borley Rectory?

I’ll let you decide.

Why not visit!
Tredegar House, Pencarn Way, Newport, NP10 8YW

Asset

Opening time

House | Tŷ

12:00 – 15:30

Garden | Gardd

11:30 – 16:00

Park | Parc

Dawn – Dusk

Tea-room | Ystafell De

10:00 – 16:00

Ticket type

With Gift Aid

Without Gift Aid

Adult (18+)

£15.40

£14.00

Child (5-17) under 5s free

£7.70

£7.00

Family (2 Adults and up to 3 children)

£38.50

£35.00

Family (1 Adult and up to 3 Children)

£23.10

£21.00

Group (Adult 18+)

£13.30

Group (Child 5-17)

£6.65

If you’re anything like me, you love a beautiful historic house… but even more when it comes with a side of ghost stories.
